Hugh Pecker and Agnes Gruntfuttock - just good friends or is there something more to their relationship? The Melchesters of Melchester Hall suffer from a particular misfortune. Lord Alfred, the grandfather of the current Lord Melchester, was known to encourage hedgehogs onto the grounds. Lord Alfred’s favourite hedgehog, which was tame and friendly, came to be known as Pootle. Unfortunately, Pootle was accidentally shot dead as Lord Alfred cleaned his gun on the patio. Very distraught, he promptly had Pootle stuffed and mounted on the mantelpiece in the Library as a mark of respect. Alfred died a few days later on the morning of November 13th 1861 in mysterious circumstances (you really don’t want to know!).

Since then all of the Lords of Melchester have been struck down by the Curse of the Stuffed Hedgehog and Lord Manfred Melchester was no exception. His body was found slumped over the steering wheel of his car with Petal, his favourite hedgehog, found, dead, under the front wheel.
